Former Gunner Lehmann’s visit fails to inspire Clan na Gael
Lehmann, never short of a word during his playing career, was an unexpected visitor to the Clan na Gael clubhouse earlier this month.
PRO Maurice Harrisson last night explained the background the incredible visit.
“One of our clubmen, Alan Clarke is the founder of STATSports, a company which works with many of the top soccer and rugby teams. Alan has done a lot of work with Arsenal and built up a strong friendship with Lehmann who was over in Ireland for the World Cup qualifier against Germany earlier this month.”
And with Clan na Gael preparing for a county intermediate football final, Clarke was keen to give his club an edge ahead of their clash with O’Connells.
“Alan rang our manager and asked if was okay to bring Jens to meet the lads after training on Thursday. Of course we were delighted to bring him to our clubhouse.
“He played top level for club and country and the lads were thrilled to hear him speak.
“He spoke for a few minutes about having a passion for your club, your team mates and the commitment involved. It was very interesting and lifted spirits.”
And according to Harrisson, the big German is a fan of gaelic football.
“Lehman has a big interest in gaelic football, having watched games on numerous occasions.
“He described it as being ‘a man’s game.’ I’m not sure how he got into it but he is certainly keen on it.
“He had a pint of Guinness with us and signed autographs and posed for photos and all that.
“It was a bit surreal but it was great to meet him.”
And did Lehmann’s word of wisdom work the oracle?
“Sadly we were beaten by two points in the final,” explained Harrisson.
