Brazil or bust for Capello and Russia

Fabio Capello has one simple aim after being announced as Russia’s new head coach — qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Capello signed a two-year deal at his unveiling yesterday and succeeds Dick Advocaat, who revealed his intention to step down and take charge of Dutch side PSV Eindhoven before Euro 2012.

“The current contract runs for two years,” said the Italian. “And my next goal — to reach the finals of the World Cup in Brazil.

“After I had finished working in England, I was angry, and I wanted to continue working. I really want to achieve your goals and fight for the cup in Brazil.

“It does not really matter with whom we compete. I now have a new beginning in a coaching career.”

Capello will be looking to rebuild his reputation after a less than impressive four years with England.

The former AC Milan, Roma and Real Madrid boss guided England to the World Cup in 2010 and to Euro 2012 but quit after the FA stripped John Terry of the captaincy due to the Chelsea defender being charged with making a racist remark to Anton Ferdinand. Terry was subsequently cleared in a magistrates court trial.
