Gomez blasts back at critics
The Bayern Munich forward headed the winner, moments before he was due to be replaced by Miroslav Klose, in the 1-0 victory in their Euro 2012 opener.
His all-round display was heavily criticised by former Germany midfielder Mehmet Scholl, though.
Scholl, who was working as a pundit for broadcaster ARD, said: âI have seen him run more (than against Portugal), but seldom less. If he did much, much more work, he would get even more chances and score more goals.â
When asked about the comments at todayâs press conference, Gomez said: âWith Mehmet and me, there is a story there. Mehmet spoke to me before at the Oktoberfest. He told me: âI know what you think about me. Since I have been an expect (pundit) you think I am a ...â
âHe has already said to me that I am not fulfilling my potential and wants to bring it out of me. And I take that on board.
âHe is a coach, you can learn a lot from coaches. I have been the most successful striker in Germany over the last five or six years, have after Messi scored the most goals in the Champions League.
âI would like to know why I should change.â
Gomez scored 13 goals in last seasonâs Champions League, one behind Messi, and scored 41 goals in all competitions for Bayern.
Scholl, who spent 15 years at Bayern as a player and won 36 caps for Germany, insisted his comments were not personal.
âThere is an impression forming that I have something against Gomez. But that is absolutely not the case. I am of this team and Gomez is a part of it.â
Franz Beckenbauer claimed Germany played âlike menâ against the Portuguese, singling out goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defender Mats Hummels and midfielder Mesut Ozil for special praise.
Writing in Bild, Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as a player and manager, said: âThat was no magic trick, that was real manâs football. With tackles, with passion, with hunger for the fight. That was always the basis of all Germanyâs European and world titles. Otherwise you win nothing.â
Beckenbauer claimed Neuer was âon the way to becoming the number one goalkeeper in the worldâ, the selection of the âuncompromisingâ Hummels was âspot-onâ and Ozil was the most âeye-catchingâ German attacker. He added: âEven more important is (coach) Jogi Low has seen that he can rely on every player.â
Next up for Germany are a Holland side looking to bounce back from their shock opening defeat to Denmark.
âAgainst us they are fighting for survival,â Beckenbauer added. âAgainst the strong Portuguese it was hard. On Wednesday it will be super hard.â
Germany boss Joachim Low could spring a few surprises for tomorrowâs game against the Netherlands after two last-minute changes paid off in the win over Portugal.
Loew opted to start with Gomez and defender Mats Hummels in place of the more experienced Miroslav Klose and Per Mertesacker.
â(Ireland coach) Giovanni Trapattoni once said that coaches are no idiots,â Loew maintained. âA coach sees things, is in constant contact with the players. The coach is very close and there are issues that help him decide. We analyse, we estimate.
âThen there are some situations where I decide out of instinct, where I go with my feeling and that is important for me personally.â
The Germans take on Netherlands in Kharkiv with the Dutch facing a possible early exit after losing 1-0 to Denmark.
Loew said although his surprises worked this time it did not mean he would stick with the same starting lineup.
