Andrews moves to stay in Trap plans while Cummins’ dreams come true

Keith Andrews says a desire to protect his place in the heart of the Republic of Ireland’s midfield ahead of Euro 2012 prompted his deadline day move from Blackburn to West Brom.

Andrews enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell with Championship outfit Ipswich in the first half of this season and said he was “hell bent’’ on leaving Ewood Park when his time at Portman Road came to an end.

Having got his way, albeit at the 11th hour, Andrews knows the importance of a strong finish to the season, as he and new club-mates Shane Long and Simon Cox, look to book their places on the plane to Poland this summer.

“I’m really looking forward to the Euros,” he said.

“It’s going to be a massive highlight of my career.

“It’s important for me to come somewhere I can kick on and I believe I’ve got that here.”

Darron Gibson, a potential threat to Andrews’ position on the international stage, was also in the headlines on deadline day.

Like Andrews, Gibson opted for pastures new in January but while the former was anxiously waiting for his transfer to go through the latter was scoring his first goal for his new club.

Gibson’s goal gave Everton victory over leaders Manchester City and the 24-year-old said his effort relieved a lot of stress after his move from Manchester United.

He said: “I think [Landon Donovan] was going to have a shot but luckily he put it in my path and I struck through it and it went in.

“It was a great feeling, a lot of stress relieved.

“All the lads have welcomed me brilliantly. They have just made me feel at home and I have settled in brilliantly and I am really enjoying it.”

Meanwhile, Graham Cummins says his move to League One side Preston is the culmination of a lifetime’s ambition.

As expected, Cummins completed his move from Cork City to Preston on deadline day for €100,000 and the 24-year-old striker yesterday expressed his delight with the move.

“I have been waiting for a move to England all my life,” he said. “Throughout my whole career I have been looking to get over here and I can already see how big football is in England by just looking at the stadium, it is unbelievable.’’

Cork City manager Tommy Dunne said the club were happy with the deal and paid tribute to Cummins.

“While we are disappointed to lose a player of Graham’s quality, we are satisfied that we reached an agreement that everyone was satisfied with,’’ he said. “Even prior to us receiving an offer for Graham, we were working hard to finalise our squad, and I am confident we will have some positive news on that in the near future.

“With Graham’s willingness to work hard, I am sure that he has a bright future in the game. I would like to thank Graham for his contribution to Cork City FC over the last two years and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
