Vidic ‘stays’ as agent ends transfer talk

NEMANJA VIDIC’S agent has dismissed talk of the Manchester United captain leaving Old Trafford.

Vidic ‘stays’ as agent ends transfer talk

The 29-year-old Serbia defender has been linked with a move away from England — Juventus the latest club reportedly interested — despite being a key part of Alex Ferguson’s side and having three years left on his contract.

However, his agent Silvano Martina has rejected any talk of a summer exit.

He told Radio Sportiva: “He’s a player that everyone wants.

“I talked to him about a hypothetical transfer and he replied, ‘I am the captain of Manchester United, earning well, I’ve won almost everything... Why should I go to Italy right now, when Italian football is going through a turbulent period?’

“This response removes any doubt about where his future lies — he stays where he is.”

Vidic joined United from Spartak Moscow in January 2006 and signed a fresh four-year contract last August. He lifted the Barclays Premier League trophy last month — an English record 19th league title — and led the Red Devils to the Champions League final.

One player still on United’s radar is Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder, and he has left the door open for a possible move away from the San Siro, despite pledging his commitment to the club two days ago.

The 27-year-old Holland international is admired by United and Chelsea but said on Friday that he was happy in Milan and saw no reason to leave the Serie A runners-up, but in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport yesterday he indicated that his future was not yet set in stone.

He told the newspaper: “The Inter fans have always treated me very well. They were wonderful and I want to simply thank them.

“Only God will decide where my future lies.”

Sneijder is under contract with Inter until June 2015.

Elsewhere, Paris St Germain have completed the signing of France striker Kevin Gameiro from Lorient on a four-year deal, reported to be an initial €11 million rising to €15m with add-ons.

The 24-year-old scored 22 goals in 36 Ligue 1 games last season and also attracted the attention of Valencia and Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could be alerted after Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo accused the Turin club of a showing him a lack of respect.

The 27-year-old Brazil international joined the Old Lady from Fiorentina in 2009 but has been mentioned as a possible makeweight to bring Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid to the club, talk that has angered Melo.

“I hear talk of this or that midfielder to be signed, but perhaps they forget that without me the team would hardly have won this year,” said Melo.

“If the club wants to sell me, then no hard feelings. I won’t stay where I’m not wanted.

“However, I choose where it is I go from here and I am certainly not lacking in offers.”
