Midleton had a glorious chance to go in front 10 minutes before half-time. Ian Stapleton’s ball over the top found Andrew Knowles but Knowles couldn’t keep his shot down from inside the box as he blazed over.

City hit the front seven minutes into the second half when Danny Murphy found Graham Cummins with a ball over the top and the City striker was brought down inside the box by Michael Kenneally.

Referee Anthony Buttimer pointed to the spot and Cummins strokedhis penalty home.

The game was over as a contest seven minutes later when Graham Kavanagh fed man-of-the-match Vinny Sullivan, who looked up and drilled a low shot from the right edge of the box low and hard inside Greene’s right-hand post.

Midleton did hit the crossbar when McNulty spilled Paul Deasy’s free-kick and Stephen O’Leary rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box with 15 minutes left.

City face St Pats in the EA Sports Cup quarter-final on Monday.
