Fan pitches penalty spot for £1m on eBay

AS WELL as being fickle, football supporters tend to be fanatical.

Fan pitches penalty spot for £1m on eBay

With that in mind, Blackburn fan Eddie Maxwell dug up the penalty spot at Ewood Park where Wayne Rooney sealed Manchester United’s 19th league title and has placed the piece of turf on public auction on eBay.

However, the stroke of entrepreneurial genius is not for Maxwell’s gain but to raise money for his Sunday league side, King Edward Guide FC. He was in luck that the pitch is being relayed this summer. “I thought, if you don’t ask you don’t get,” he said. “They were happy for me to take it because it was being dug up. Maybe Rooney would be interested in buying. I thought this was a great way to help the club.”

Bids for the spot reached a staggering £1m (€1.13m), sparking an eBay investigation into the suspicious rise in figures. Sporting memorabilia firms had earlier placed genuine bids of £200,000.
