Uefa have confirmed that they have opened an investigation into the alleged spitting incident during half time of the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Israel in Serbia on Sunday night.

A heated exchanged between the two dugouts took place as the teams returned to the dressing rooms and it has since been alleged that Ireland fitness coach Damien Doyle had been spat at from a member of the Israeli contingent.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson decided against commenting on the matter in his post-match press conference, opting instead to leave the issue to Uefa, who confirmed on Tuesday morning that they have opened an official investigation.

“Following a review of the official reports which contained an allegation of an incident in or around the tunnel at halftime, an UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct the appropriate disciplinary investigation regarding potential misconducts from player(s) on the occasion of the UEFA Nations League 2027 League Phase match between Republic of Ireland and Israel, played on 4 October 2026 in Backa Topola, Serbia.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
