Kuszczak insists he can be United’s number one
Van der Sar, currently suffering from flu, is debating whether to retire from football at the end of the season.
United have continued to be linked with several goalkeepers despite signing Anders Lindegaard from Aalesund. But Kuszczak, 28, is determined to become the number one — or move on.
He said: “I know I have not got the biggest name in the world, and I do not want this to sound arrogant... I think I am good enough.
“I have talked to the boss (Alex Ferguson) a few times and he said we will see what happens at the end of the season.
“I know that in the meantime if I get a chance I have to play well because that is the only way I am going to impress him. If Sir Alex Ferguson decides I am not good enough, then I will look for another club.
“Everything is open now. I am realistic about my situation. It would not frighten me to take over as Edwin’s successor. Why should it? I am not new here.
“If I play for this club long term I will be really happy because that has always been my dream. I came to Manchester to try to be a top goalkeeper for many years like my idol Peter Schmeichel.”
Of more immediate concern to Ferguson is Sunday’s trip to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham.
And yesterday former Tottenham star Ossie Ardiles claimed the north London side go into Sunday’s game against the unbeaten league leaders as ‘‘favourites’’ and are capable of winning the title for the first time since 1961.
Ardiles said: “I think we will go into the match as favourites.
“In the past when we have come up against teams like Manchester United we haven’t beaten them because we didn’t have the belief but now we have. I think we will win it.
“Spurs are getting better and better as a team and there is no reason why we cannot win the league.”
Ardiles, meanwhile, admits Europe’s top clubs will all have Gareth Bale in their sights this summer but is confident that the club will hang on to their star winger.
“There is no doubt that Bale will be targeted this summer. All the best teams in the world will be after him,” said Ardiles.
“Players in the past like Berbatov had to leave because they wanted to play in the Champions League. He left because we couldn’t give him that platform, but now we can.
“Last year he was good but this season Gareth has been even better. He has been outstanding.
“He is the best player in his position in the world.”
