Ireland girls seek the crowning glory
Noel King’s ‘Girls in Green’ dethroned European champions Germany on Tuesday courtesy of a stunning strike from defender, Megan Campbell and the manager has insisted that while the result stunned the super powers in Europe, his side remain fully focused on their main objective – to win the final.
King said: “As soon as the final whistle went in the semi-final, everybody’s mood changed. We spent 24 hours up in the air. It is a marvellous achievement and there’s no point trying to dampen the enthusiasm. However, after that semi-final victory, the whole squad have got straight back to work on the training ground as they are so hungry to win this title.
” Every team we meet at this level are going to be a different challenge and Spain are no different. They are a strong, technical and skilful outfit which is a feature that runs through a lot of Spanish national teams so I think that it will be a difficult game for us.”
The manager spoke of his delight at the support his side have received from Ireland since the competition started last week:
“At our final training session today, we received a communication from the President Mary McAleese with a letter of support which was an absolutely fantastic honour for the squad.
“The news that RTÉ will screen the game live through their website is another wonderful legacy of our success in the competition,” he said.
However, the manager recognises that his players still have to show their credentials on the biggest stage.
“You never know how good you are until you have played the best,” he said.
“Everybody knows about the Irish fighting spirit, but I don’t think passion and bravery will be enough, because the Spanish are technical, clever and very quick.”
The match, which begins at 12.30pm (Irish time) will be televised live on Eurosport 2 while it will also be streamed live on the RTÉ website on www.rte.ie/live
