Juventus crash out as Bayern advance

JUVENTUS crashed out of the Champions League with a miserable performance in front of their own fans as they capitulated to a rampant Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico last night.

Juventus crash out as Bayern advance

Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt had little to do at his own end, but he levelled from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after David Trezeguet had given Juve the lead against the run of play in Turin.

Ivica Olic then put Bayern ahead in the 51st minute, before Mario Gomez and substitute Anatoliy Tymoschuk gave the scoreline a one-sided look which did not flatter the visitors.

The win saw Bayern claim second place in Group A behind Bordeaux and a place in the last 16, while Juve, who were undefeated in 16 home European games before this evening, dropped into the Europa League.

Bordeaux concluded their impressive campaign on a winning note against Maccabi Haifa, Jussie scoring the only goal in the 13th minute.

In Group C, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fifth and sixth Champions League goals for Real Madrid as he inspired the Spanish side to a 3-1 victory in Marseille that confirmed them as group winners.

Events elsewhere meant Madrid were never likely to miss out on the last 16 of the competition but a Ronaldo brace ensured they would enter the knockout phase in style.

He scored either side of Raul Albiol’s 60th-minute effort for the visitors, with Lucho Gonzalez scoring for Marseille but later missing a penalty that would have made it 2-2.

The game got off to the perfect start for Real as, with the first serious attack of the match, Rafael Van der Vaart drew a foul from Edouard Cisse.

Ronaldo took the free-kick 35 yards from goal on the left flank and somehow managed to send the ball beyond the diving Steve Mandanda in the Marseille goal.

His second strike settled the matter 10 minutes from time, coolly finding the net from 18 yards.

AC Milan joined Real Madrid in the knockout stages despite an unconvincing 1-1 draw at FC Zurich.

After 20 minutes, the visitors lost Thiago Silva to injury and eight minutes later they conceded to Milan Gajic’s wonderful free-kick.

But Alain Rochat was dismissed for a professional foul and Ronaldinho converted from the penalty spot after 63 minutes as the Rossoneri progressed.

In Group B, CSKA Moscow went into their clash at Besiktas against the backdrop of confirmation that two of their players had tested positive for banned substances following their meeting with Man United at Old Trafford last month.

Despite that, the Russian side booked their place in the knockout stage after posting a last-gasp 2-1 win.

With Manchester United defeating Wolfsburg 3-1 in the other Group B fixture, a point would have been enough for the Russians to progress, but, as it was, goals from Milos Krasic and Eugeni Aldonin ensured Leonid Slutsky’s troops went through as clear runners-up.

In Group D, Atletico Madrid scraped their way into the Europa League despite suffering a heavy 3-0 home defeat to already-qualified Porto at a half-empty Vicente Calderon.

The Rojiblancos slumped to a humbling defeat after conceding twice inside the opening 14 minutes and then a third midway through the second half, with Bruno Alves, Falcao and Hulk on target.
