Ronaldo runs riot as Real maul Marseille
Madrid struggled to make any headway in the opening period, but three goals in six second-half minutes from big-money signings Ronaldo (two) and Kaka ensured Manuel Pellegrini’s men of a seventh successive competitive victory this campaign.
However, Marseille will be angry about the 60th-minute refereeing decision that left them down to 10 men and gave Kaka the chance to double Madrid’s lead from the penalty spot, with Souleymane Diawara being penalised for a hard but seemingly fair sliding challenge on Ronaldo.
That tackle earned Diawara his second yellow card and Kaka rolled home the resulting spot-kick to leave Madrid in total control and well on their way to a second successive Champions League triumph.
Elsewhere in Group C, Hannu Tihinen’s clever flick gave FC Zurich a shock 1-0 win at AC Milan. The Finnish centre back expertly turned in a 10th minute corner with his heel to hand the Swiss champions their first Group C points.
In Manchester United’s Group B, CSKA Moscow scored in each half to beat Besiktas 2-1 in a scrappy match and earn their first points.
Alan Dzagoyev put the home side ahead after six minutes when he drilled a 20-metre curving shot into the top corner, beyond diving Besiktas keeper Rustu Recber.
CSKA’s Serbian winger Milos Krasic doubled the lead just past the hour when he burst into the area, sidestepped a defender and fired a low shot past Recber.
Ekrem Dag pulled one back for the Turks in stoppage time.
In Chelsea’s group, second-half goals from Falcao and Rolando secured Porto a deserved 2-0 win against struggling Atletico Madrid.
Falcao opened the scoring with a neat back-heel 15 minutes from time and Rolando snaffled a rebound to clinch the points seven minutes later after a fine initial save from substitute goalkeeper David De Gea.
The result earned the Portuguese side a first pool win following their opening loss to Chelsea, but heaped further misery on Abel Resino’s visitors. Atletico lie in La Liga’s relegation zone and were booed off after being held to a goalless draw by Apoel Nicosia a fortnight ago.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich were held to a 0-0 draw by Juventus in a one-sided encounter at the Allianz Arena. Juventus will be the happier of the two sides after emerging with a point despite a dominant first-half Bayern performance, with Franck Ribery carving out the hosts’ best chances from the midfield.
In the same group, Bordeaux picked up their first win but made hard work of it as Maccabi Haifa held out for 83 minutes before succumbing in a 1-0 defeat.
The breakthrough arrived as Gregory Sertic’s corner was headed home by Ciani from close range.
