Coughlan relief as City wage row ends
The squad will get 60% of their August arrears on September 10 and then five more instalments on dates up to and including December 10.
“I am delighted this deal has been reached with the players,” said Tom Coughlan. “It’s been a very hard time for us all over the past few months, but that is all behind us now. A new payment structure is in place so it’s onwards and upwards and see where we can go in terms of the league.
“If we can’t win it, then Europe should be our goal and hopefully the fans will turn out and support the club (against Galway United at Turner’s Cross tonight, 7.45pm).”
Coughlan also thanked supporters’ trust FORAS for their assistance since he took over the club. The group withdrew their services from the club at their AGM on Tuesday night.
“I would like to thank FORAS for all their all help over the past few months. I have not been able to agree a deal with them in relation to investing their cash in the club, but we move on and our own fundraising efforts will commence immediately.”
Cork City captain Dan Murray said: “We are pleased to have come to an agreement with the club regarding payment of wages. We can now focus all of our attention on finishing this season as high up the league table as we can and qualifying for Europe.”
A club statement also added: “While a number of clubs have sought to implement pay cuts, Cork City Football Club is determined to pay the players and staff all monies owed to them up to the end of the season.
“Cork City FC would like to thank the staff for their cooperation and their patience in this matter, and are delighted that we can now focus our attention on the remainder of our league campaign as we bid to qualify for Europe.”
Meanwhile, City’s September 25 visit to Richmond Park to take on St Patrick’s Athletic will be broadcast live on TG4.
