ALEX FERGUSON has backed Wayne Rooney to join his list of illustrious Manchester United captains.

Rooney will lead a youthful United side into battle against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico tonight.

Although the England forward was a prime contender to take the captain’s armband with so many key men missing, John O’Shea and Wes Brown are both older and more experienced.
