Cisse ‘bonded’ to Liverpool fans
The France international is back at Anfield tonight having shared in Liverpool’s Champions League final glory and their FA Cup final win over West Ham two seasons ago.
There is a doubt over Cisse’s involvement after he picked up an ankle injury this week and has only been able to train for the last two days.
But he will not want to miss this one. He still has a mansion in Cheshire — which comes with the infamous Lord of Frodsham title — and “has no intention of selling it”, having married a Liverpool girl while he was an Anfield player.
He said: “Liverpool were always my number one choice to stay, but you cannot always have what you want in football.
“I have so many good memories of my time here. The Champions League final, the Super Cup and FA Cup finals — I feel bonded to this club.
“The win in Istanbul is the highlight. It was such a crazy game and a crazy night. No player could ever forget that and I imagine the fans will always remember it.”
Marseille coach Erik Gerets hopes Cisse and the other ex-Liverpool star, Bolo Zenden, have been able to provide vital information ahead of his side’s Champions League clash.
Gerets only took over last month and the Group A game will be his first in charge of the struggling French league runners-up.
Gerets said: “It is important that we have two former Liverpool players in our squad, and I hope the things they have told me about Liverpool are right, otherwise they will be in for a big punishment.”
