Under-fire Lee faces the Campo questions

THIS will do little to quell speculation about the respective hot seats at Bolton and Tottenham but Martin Jol last night insisted he has assurances from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that his job is safe.

Under-fire Lee faces the Campo questions

Despite alleged dalliances with the Sevilla coach Juande Ramos and phone calls to José Mourinho, Jol insists he will still be with the club next season.

“It would be a hell of a job for Jose and he knows that. Daniel Levy phoned me and said (the reports) were rubbish and said ‘I hope that you will be with me next year’. He’s always backing me.”

Sammy Lee, who faced the prospect of being removed if his team had lost, saw his men put up an improved display.

Spurs had seen Steed Malbranque threaten on a couple of occasions and Teemu Tainio strike just over from distance but their first decent opening came after 25 minutes when Robbie Keane drifted out to the left and crossed to the far post only for Dimitar Berbatov’s thumping volley to be blocked by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

On 34 minutes Jermaine Jenas broke onto Didier Zokora’s chip and despite his effort being blocked by Jaaskelainen, Campo only cleared as far as Keane, who had enough power on his low drive to fire his first league goal of the season.

The hosts replied with a spot of old-style Bolton just five minutes later. El-Hadji Diouf’s driven free-kick from the right was met by Campo at the far post and in spite of the attentions of Jenas and Rocha, he managed to head across goal into the far corner.

Despite not having included Campo in his squad all season, Lee insisted there are no problems in his relationship with the Spaniard.

“He’s a big favourite and he gave everyone a lift. He’s very professional, a proud guy and I’ve got nothing but respect for him.”
