Chelsea deny planning to replace Mourinho

CHELSEA have reiterated their support for manager Jose Mourinho and refuted reports they have drawn up a list of possible replacements for the Portuguese.

Chelsea deny planning to replace Mourinho

Reports had linked Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi with a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Lippi has a hugely successful track record, having won the Champions League and several Serie A titles with Juventus, and is enjoying some time off following last summer’s success in Germany.

However, the Premiership champions have moved to dismiss these reports and given their backing to Mourinho.

A statement read: “Following further media speculation regarding the position of Chelsea Football Club manager and comments allegedly attributed to Marcello Lippi, the club would like to make clear that no list of candidates has been drawn up to replace Jose Mourinho.

“Nobody from Chelsea FC has spoken to Mr Lippi or his representatives or indeed anyone regarding the manager’s job.

“As previously stated, Jose Mourinho has a contract until 2010, he has the support of everybody at Chelsea and he has said he wants to stay for the time of his contract.”

Chelsea expect Ashley Cole to play again this season after the England international defender was diagnosed with posterior cruciate ligament damage.

The left-back was injured during Wednesday’s night’s Barclays Premiership clash with Blackburn when he twisted his left knee – and it was feared he may be ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

However, a scan has revealed the 26-year-old does not require surgery and he is expected to feature again this season for the Blues.

However, the player is almost certainly out of the England squad for next week's international with Spain at Old Trafford.

Chelsea skipper John Terry will return for tomorrow’s clash with Charlton.

Terry has been out since December 13 with a back injury that required surgery. The England defender’s rehabilitation was complicated by a calf problem.

The Blues’ form has suffered without the England skipper — they have slipped six points behind leaders Manchester United in the Premiership — but he is fit to face Charlton at The Valley.
