Benetiz possible transfer splurge too late to save season

PROVIDED the proposed €670m Maktoum takeover goes through, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez should have the pick of the world’s available players in next month’s transfer window.

Not that it will be of any immediate help to him, of course, because squads for the Champions League first knockout round — in which Liverpool play holders Barcelona — are practically set in stone.

And Benitez’s team are already at the highest point they are likely to scale in this season’s Premiership — third.
