Henry to miss European kick-off

ARSENAL captain Thierry Henry will miss the first leg of the Champions League qualifier on August 8/9 because of a lack of fitness.

Henry to miss European kick-off

Boss Arsene Wenger feels the tie is too soon for the striker, who has missed pre-season training after playing for France in the World Cup final.

Arsenal are likely to face Dinamo Zagreb, who lead Ekranas 4-1 after their first-leg match.

The Gunners will also be without keeper Jens Lehmann, who is suspended.

Wenger confirmed: “Jens is suspended and Thierry will be short as well.”

He said Henry will not return to the club until tomorrow — only one week before the Gunners kick-off their European campaign.

Meanwhile, Jose Antonio Reyes has added to the uncertainty around his future by saying he is happy at Arsenal, while also admitting he wants to join Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old stated on Arsenal’s website he is “very happy” at the club.

But he then told Spanish paper As he is “not looking for another club”, but “I have always said that Madrid is one of my biggest targets. Everyone knows it.

“Clubs are looking for me but the only way that any team, including Madrid, can sign me is by speaking to Arsenal.”

However, he says he will not be unhappy if he stays at Arsenal.

“I am very grateful to Arsenal for the faith they have put in me.

“I don’t have any problem with the club. There are Spaniards in the team and that makes everything easier. The way of life is a different matter. There are many things I miss about Spain, not just the food and the weather.

“But I am happy and I will carry on training. If I have to stay with Arsenal, I will do so happily.

“Not every player has the chance to play for a club like this, with players of this quality. I have left everything in the hands of my agent.”

Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zokora has revealed how he snubbed Tottenham’s arch-rivals Arsenal to move to White Hart Lane.

“One of the big things was that Tottenham really showed that they wanted me. That really pleased me. Kolo Toure and Eboue are friends of mine, and of course it would have been nice to play with them — but I really wanted to go to Tottenham.

“I was impressed by them and I know Damien Comolli, their director of football. I was very impressed by what they had to offer.

“Comolli came out to speak to me in Germany and told me what a great club Tottenham is. I’m also very excited about playing with players like Aaron Lennon, who are the future of English football.”

It was the influence of Comolli, who first took Zokora to France from Belgian side Genk, that clinched the deal in Tottenham’s favour.

Zokora added: “He was a strong influence for me because he took me to France in the first place. That wasn’t the only reason though.

“I chose Tottenham because it’s a great club.”
