Soccer: Van der Meyde fit to face Scots

DUTCH winger Andy van der Meyde fainted during a television interview yesterday but the Dutch FA KNVB said he would be fit to play in tomorrow’s Euro 2004 playoff second leg against Scotland.

Soccer: Van der Meyde fit to face Scots

Van der Meyde, a constant danger against the Scots despite the 1-0 defeat on Saturday, suffered constriction of the blood vessels, aggravated by heat from the TV crew's spotlights during an interview at a Dutch team news conference.

During an interview, the striker suddenly collapsed and fell with his head against a loudspeaker. But after the initial shock was over things turned out not to be as serious as feared.

Van der Meyde, who plays for Inter Milan, was examined by the Dutch squad's doctor and then had lunch.

Meanwhile, Tommy Burns is convinced Scotland were lucky to beat Holland on Saturday but insists the players will try to use that knowledge as a tool to complete the job in Amsterdam tomorrow night.

James McFadden was the only man to find the net on Saturday as the Scots' goal led a charmed life, and Berti Vogts' right-hand man was keen to make it clear there was still a huge amount of work still to be done.

Burns said: "I think the most important thing to make clear is that Scotland are not fooled in any way. We are not thinking that we are a better team than Holland.

"We were very fortunate in the game on Saturday and we know that. We had a lot of luck. But our players gave everything in the game physically, pressing, chasing and competing: all the things that Scotland can do well.

"We cannot compete on the same level technically as the Dutch, we know that and Holland can still qualify."

The Dutch will be favourites to inflict revenge at the Amsterdam ArenA and Burns predicted that even if Advocaat changed his starting line-up he would be unlikely to change his style of play.

He said: "Holland always play the same way. They like to open the pitch up, have good possession of the ball and they like to move it around the field.

"They are one of the top teams in the world at that and always have been. They have got a fantastic football culture but they are obviously going through a difficult time.

"I think the biggest decision Dick Advocaat has to make is what players to play because the Dutch squad is full of top-quality, world-class players.

"That must be difficult for a coach to see who is the best player and try to deal with different types of guys. He has to decide who is best to play up front, who is best to play wide."

Vogts has a selection dilemma himself as Christian Dailly is suspended following his first half booking for kicking the ball away after a foul.

The West Ham man had been used in a midfield holding role, protecting the back four, and now Vogts must look for a replacement.
