Kewell set to make £7 million move to Liverpool

HARRY KEWELL looks set to complete a £7 million move to Liverpool later today after snubbing last-ditch bids from Manchester United and Chelsea.

Kewell set to make £7 million move to Liverpool

Kewell, who has turned his back on the offer of becoming Leeds' highest-paid player on £48,000-per-week, has apparently already agreed a £60,000-per-week package at Anfield.

The player is to 'reveal' his choice to a TV station in his homeland.

He said: "I have been speaking with them (the club concerned) for over six months and everything just seems to be right for me to go there."

The two clubs, who held talks over the weekend, remain in negotiations regarding a fee and the structure of the payments, although it is unlikely there will be any last minute hitches.

Despite Liverpool's inability to offer Kewell Champions League football for next season, the chance to join the club he supported as a boy has proved irresistible.

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier will be delighted to have pipped Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and Claudio Ranieri to Kewell's signature, underlining the Merseyside giants still have pulling power, despite it being 13 years since they won the title.

Arsenal initially missed out on signing Kewell as they were unable to find the cash, both in terms of transfer fee and wages, allowing Liverpool to jump in. Manchester United and Chelsea are understood to have made late offers for the 24-year-old, but have also lost out to the Anfield club.

Arsenal hope to resolve the futures of star duo Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp in the near future, while speculation about Chelsea's planned £30 million bid for striker Thierry Henry has received short shrift in the famous marble halls of Highbury.

Weekend reports had suggested France midfielder Vieira had tied up a new deal with the Gunners but Vieira quickly to put the record straight.

"Contrary to the article, I have not actually signed a new contract with Arsenal Football Club yet," Vieira told the club's website, www.arsenal.com.

"However, negotiations are going well, improving all the time, and I'm very hopeful things will be sorted out by the start of the season. I would like to make it clear that I will make any announcements regarding my future through Arsenal Football Club."

The official line from the club is that they do not comment on newspaper speculation or players' contract negotiations but the noises coming out of Highbury suggest Gunners fans can rest assured the club will hold on to their major stars including Henry.

Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover of London rivals Chelsea has prompted claims the Blues have £150m to spend on players and there were reports he was set to make a cheeky bid to tempt the prolific Henry across the capital.

However, Arsenal chiefs will flatly refuse to listen should any offers come in for the Frenchman as they will not allow their best players to leave, which of course raises hopes over Vieira pledging his long-term commitment to the club soon.

The future of former Holland international Dennis Bergkamp appeared to be less clear after his agent was reported to have stated the player would remain in his homeland rather than report for pre-season training as the dispute over his new deal rumbles on.

"Dennis and I are very surprised and insulted by the way Arsenal have approached the situation. There is no way he will be there (at training)," agent Rob Jansen said. "We are still waiting to see if Arsenal will improve the offer."

Manchester United shares surged just over 10% yesterday amid reports of bid interest for the English champions, a week after premier league rivals Chelsea were bought by a Russian billionaire. United shares were up 15 pence at 160 pence in late afternoon trade, close to a 12-month high.
