FAI OFFICIALS have dismissed as mere speculation, weekend reports suggesting that the short list to find the next Ireland manager has been completed by adviser Bryan Hamilton.

FAI officials dismiss Ireland manager shortlist speculation

Former England internationals Bryan Robson and Peter Reid were touted as strong favourites for the job ahead of former Japanese manager Phillipe Troussier and underage boss Brian Kerr.

However, Merrion Square completely rejected the notion that Hamilton’s work is anywhere near completion, stressing everything is on course for the January 10 deadline when his list is due to be presented to the Football Association for consideration.

“The short list will not be completed until the second week of January,” an official said yesterday. “Anything else is merely speculation. There is nothing drawn up in any shape or form whatsoever. Bryan has been talking to people and meeting people over the Christmas period and is continuing to do so.”

The preferred list of candidates will be presented on January 10, at which point those in contention will be called for a formal interview. A manager will be named thereafter and is set to be in place for the Republic’s first game of 2003 against Scotland.
