Charlton: United running smoothly

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Bobby Charlton insists everything remains on an even keel at Old Trafford, despite uncertainty over the club's future.

Charlton: United running smoothly

Takeover talk has engulfed the club in recent weeks while Rio Ferdinand's eight-month ban, has weakened their on-field challenge and the board has come under pressure from major shareholders wanting to investigate transfer dealings.

But Charlton, a director at United, has urged supporters not to panic at suggestions of a planned takeover of the club.

"The club is fine, we have been very successful over the last 10 or 15 years and there is no reason why it shouldn't continue," Charlton said. "We are a very stable outfit.

"I think there has been a lot of hype about people who buy shares but people have always bought shares.

"At the moment no-one is taking over but that seems to be the fear: that someone will come in and everything will change.

"The club is a well-run outfit and we don't do things lightly. In fact, it is a bit of an institution, it needs to be protected and it will be."

Speaking at the launch of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation's first initiative in England, a project to tackle depression in young people staged at Macclesfield Town, Charlton insisted United are still on track despite slipping five points behind Arsenal in the title race.

He said: "In a perfect world I would like Rio Ferdinand playing but we will have to wait and see about how long we have to wait for him.

"We are second in the Premiership, we are in the Champions League, we are still in the FA Cup, so I think we have less problems than most.

"It will all be resolved and I would tell the fans not to worry, nobody is going to take over at Manchester United and take us in the wrong direction."

World Cup winner Charlton hopes to get United involved in this latest scheme, which targets 16 to 35-year-old men who might be susceptible to suicide without help.

Of the 'It's a Goal' programme, Charlton added: "We would like to help by using our fame as sport has the power to change the world."
