Ronaldinho denies links to United and Barcelona

BRAZIL World Cup star Ronaldinho has denied speculation he is ready to quit Paris Saint Germain for either Manchester United or Barcelona.

Ronaldinho denies links to United and Barcelona

"People are saying I'll be going to Barcelona or Manchester United but I have never been contacted by either club," the 22-year-old revealed last night.

"I'm highly motivated for the coming season. PSG need me and I have four years left on my contract.

"The president, Laurent Perpere, was on the phone to me the other day and told me he was counting on me for the coming season and that really motivates me."

It is understood TV channel Canal Plus the majority shareholder would accept offers in excess of £30m for a player they signed for £4m less than a year ago.

But coach Luis Fernandez has insisted the Brazil star will stay put. "Whatever the offer, I will say no," he said.

Ronaldinho, who has also been linked with Inter Milan, was one of the stars of the World Cup. He scored twice and acted as the provider for Rivaldo and Ronaldo for winners Brazil.

His curling free kick to beat England goalkeeper David Seaman in the quarter-final was one of the highlights of the tournament.

He signed for PSG from Gremio in July 2001. Initially he struggled to impose himself but his form picked up in the second half of the season and he finished as top scorer with nine goals.

Elsewhere, Blackburn manager Graeme Souness claims he will not walk out on Rovers if they are forced to sell Damien Duff.

It had been reported Souness was stalling on signing a new contract until he received assurances from the Ewood Park board that neither Duff nor David Dunn would be sold.

Souness claims he would never make such demands and that he will sit down with the board to discuss his future when he returns for pre-season training next week.

He said: "It's not my style to play games with people. I've got a good relationship with the board and I'm very happy at Blackburn so I'm not going to hold a gun to anybody's head.

''We've got some very good players here and my intention is to keep them because we are trying to build something which is going to last.''

Duff is being tracked by Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal and while Souness is desperate to hold on to the Ireland World Cup star, he knows money talks.

The Scot understands that if Duff refuses the club's offer of a contract extension, they will probably have to cash in on him now rather than watch his value plummet as he nears the end of his current deal.

''I've been in the game long enough to know how simple economics work as well and if someone like Inter Milan came along with an offer of ridiculous money for one of our players, whether it's Damien Duff or Brad Friedel, then we'd have to consider it,'' he said in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

''But the fact remains we have not had any offers for Damien and we don't want any either because at this moment in time he's not for sale.''

Rovers are prepared to make Duff, who has two years left on his remaining deal, one of the club's top earners in a bid to keep him and opened talks at the end of last season.

Chief executive John Williams claims the club will be flexible in the make or break talks and he said: ''Damien can have a deal as short or as long as he wants, within reason.''

Meanwhile, Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce has revealed he set out to buy Aliou Cisse after the Senegal captain outplayed Patrick Vieira at the World Cup. "You don't play 80 odd times for Paris Saint Germain if you can't play, but when I saw his performance against possibly the best midfielder in the world, it made me push all the buttons to try and make the deal work," he said.

Cisse completed his £1.5 million move from PSG yesterday. "Birmingham are new to the Premiership and I am looking forward to the challenge," the 27-year-old said.

He is Birmingham's second signing of the summer after Robbie Savage and it appears Poland striker Emmanuel Olisadebe could be set to follow.
