Recall on the red cards for Upson

ARSENE WENGER may consider recalling centre-back Matthew Upson from a loan spell at First Division Reading with England star Sol Campbell facing a ban for Arsenal’s vital clash at Manchester United a week on Saturday.

Recall on the red cards for Upson

Upson, 23, has been getting rave reviews at the Berkshire club who signed him on a temporary transfer at the beginning of September.

They are expected to want to extend the loan but many Arsenal fans were surprised when Wenger did not call him back to Highbury earlier this season when veteran defender Martin Keown picked up a hamstring injury.

Wenger admits time "will be short" for Keown, 36, to complete his recovery having been out for 13 games.

And with Campbell banned at Old Trafford after his dismissal against Southampton on Saturday Wenger has only one other experienced centre-back in Igors Stepanovs to play alongside erratic Frenchman Pascal Cygan whose blunders led to all three Southampton goals at St Mary's.

It was however, Latvian international Stepanovs who bore the brunt of a 6-1 Arsenal thrashing at United two years ago and he has still looked shaky in his only two starts this season, the Worthington Cup defeat by Sunderland and a Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven.

Upson, one of Wenger's rare English signings in a £1.6million deal with Luton five years ago, has made only 38 first team starts for the Gunners.

He broke a leg at Everton in February having seemingly established himself in the side at last after 18 months out with a knee ligament injury.

Campbell whose red card challenge at Southampton also gave away a penalty, will serve just a one-match ban even though at first sight of his offence it suggested referee Paul Durkin sent him off for a violent foul which carries a three-match suspension.

In fact Durkin's report card shows Campbell's dismissal was for "unfairly denying a goalscoring opportunity". Television evidence proved his tackle won the ball but also that he barged over Ecuador striker Agustin Delgado in the process.

Boss Wenger has already indicated he will not appeal against the red card Arsenal's third this season and the 47 since the Frenchman took charge although he admitted: "I've been in England a long time now and still don't know what makes a penalty and what does not.

"For me it is when you go for the man but Sol went for the ball. You must ask Durkin about his decisions. I have not done that because it is not my job to question the referee. In the end you must accept what they do."

At least Campbell's early bath gave him extra time to rest his suspect back ahead of Wednesday's second round Champions League opener against Roma in Italy.

Striker Dennis Bergkamp, who scored the 99th goal of his Arsenal career at Southampton, will not figure in Rome even though the non-flying Dutchman had offered to travel there by rail and road.

Meanwhile, two-goal James Beattie insisted it is about time Southampton were given due credit for spiking the Barclaycard Premiership's big guns. "We've done this kind of thing a few times and deserve credit. We foiled Arsenal and we upset them. We matched them for football and could have had more goals. I don't think anybody will dispute that."

Southampton have climbed to ninth place and are unbeaten since April at St Mary's, the new ground they opened last season when many, including Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, warned that leaving the cramped confines of The Dell would lose Saints an advantage over intimidated visitors.

Now, though, they need only a little away success to become a real threat in the top flight.

Manager Gordon Strachan, whose predecessors David Jones and Glenn Hoddle took Southampton to 10 and 11 in the Premiership following years of relegation-fighting, said: "You will have to ask the people who were here before how their sides compare to this current team.

"I wouldn't know but I do know we are not far away from being a very good side even though we know every game is a big test.
