Kelly doubt for Derry final after Tranmere job

DERRY CITY are uncertain if David Kelly will be available for the FAI Cup final following his appointment as assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers.

Kelly joined the club at the start of the season and has played in 10 games and scored twice.

The Brandywell boss Kevin Mahon accepted the decision but remains hopeful that the former international will be available on Sunday week against Shamrock Rovers.

“It is a severe blow particularly at this time while we are preparing for crunch league games and of course the FAI cup final next week.

“However, I fully understand the position that David was in. He probably would have retired at the end of this season and opportunities such as this do not come along very often.

“We will be talking to David and Tranmere Rovers as to David’s availability for the FAI Cup final,” City manager Kevin Mahon said.

The former Republic of Ireland international signed for Tranmere Rovers in 1997 and made over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals, before joining Sheffield United.

Tranmere manager Ray Mathias said: “I’m delighted to see David returning to Liverpool. He is a great character and will be a huge asset to the club.’’

Kelly, who played with 10 members of the squad during his previous spell at the club, was also thrilled to get his first coaching role at Tranmere.

‘‘It’s always been an ambition of mine to go into coaching and it’s great to get the chance at Prenton Park,’’ he added.

‘‘I’ve kept in touch with a lot of people at Tranmere and I can’t wait to work with Ray and the players to help get the club back where we belong.’’
