Keane continues to weigh up options as Bolton join chase
Keane has been mulling over his future since his abrupt departure from Man United but, with a number of leading clubs already in the frame, is in no rush to make a swift decision.
Earlier this year, the 34-year-old claimed he could not join another Premiership club because he would not want to play against United.
However, he is bound to be giving consideration to such a move given the number of sides who have indicated a desire to sign him.
Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric was first to declare his hand, with West Brom boss Bryan Robson also claiming he had tried to contact Keane at his home, but so far without success.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan would be quick to make a move should Keane show any inclination to join the progressive outfit and now the Latics’ near neighbours Bolton have joined the list of potential suitors even if Allardyce admits luring Keane to the Reebok is an outside bet.
“It would be difficult to get Roy Keane,” admitted the Trotters chief. “I am sure he’ll sit down in a day or two and discuss with his agent where he wants to go. But if we do get an opportunity, we’d like to talk to him.”
Despite the obvious attraction, both Bolton and Wigan provide of allowing Keane to remain close to his family in the north-west, Celtic remain strong favourites to sign Keane.
There are some obvious stumbling blocks in the way of a move to Parkhead, particularly how Celtic could get anywhere close to the £90,000-a-week salary Keane was getting at Old Trafford.
However, if a deal can be done, the indications are Keane’s presence would be warmly welcomed in the Celtic dressing room.
“Roy Keane is a world class player, there is no doubt about that,” said striker John Hartson. “We have all played against him and we all hold him in the highest regard as a player and a person. He is truly world class, one of the best there has ever been, especially for Manchester United.
“I know Ryan Giggs very well and he speaks very highly of Roy. But in terms of him coming here, you should be asking the manager and the board - I am just a player.”
His captain, Neil Lennon says he would welcome the challenge of Keane’s arrival. “If Roy does come, it will be great,” Lennon said. “If he doesn’t, we carry on regardless. Anyone who wants my place will have to play really, really well because I’m not giving it up easily.”
Keane’s agent Michael Kennedy has said he anticipated a call from Celtic, who have been heavily linked with Keane.
“Roy is not yet prepared to accept he’ll have to compromise,” Michael Kennedy has reportedly said.
“There has been a lot of interest in him and he has a lot to consider. Celtic have not stepped up their interest but we are expecting a call.”
