Rockmount out after disputed goal
The Cork side would have been one of the favourites to go all the way again this year but a hotly disputed goal 10 minutes from time was enough to send the Dublin club through to round four.
There was no such problems for John Caulfield’s Avondale United, who will have high hopes of a good run in this season’s competition, as they trounced Greenhill Boys 5-0 in Walkinstown.
Andrew Goulding put Avondale in front after 15 minutes when he forced the ball home from a Damien Roddis corner before Mark O’Sullivan set up Eoin O’Driscoll for the second five minutes later.
Avondale were three up on the half-hour when David Spratt and O’Driscoll combined to set up Mark O’Sullivan for the first of his three goals.
O’Sullivan headed in another Roddis corner on the hour mark and scored again five minutes later from the penalty spot after Andrew Knowles was brought down.
In the only all-Cork clash, College Corinthains advanced to round four after a 2-1 win over Temple United at Castletreasure on Saturday.
Robbie Brohan and Edwin Buckley were on the mark for Corinthians, with the Temple goal coming courtesy of an own goal four minutes from time.
Douglas Hall, who reached the semi-final last year, only to bow out to eventual winners Wayside, are also through after a 1-0 win over Liffey Wanderers in Dublin. Prolific striker John McCarthy was the hero for Tiny Cotter’s side when he pounced for the only goal of the game one minute before the break.
Another Cork side to advance were Blarney United as goals from Daniel Corkery and a Dave Moynihan penalty earned them a 2-1 away win over Kinvara Ards.
Carrigaline United and Loughshinny will have to meet again in Cork on January 8 after a 1-1 draw, with Ken Dennehy grabbing Carrig’s goal.
Meanwhile Tramore Athletic and Ringmahon Rangers both went out of the competition in the capital. St Mochta’s got the better of Tramore 2-1 and Garda defeated Ringmahon 2-0.
The two Munster Senior League Premier Division games between Midleton and Castleview and Leeds and UCC were postponed.
In the Division 1B, Mayfield United are the new leaders after a 2-0 victory over Casement Celtic at Mayfield Park. Ian Murphy and Dave Kenny were the northsiders’ scorers.
With Tramore Athletic engaged in Intermediate Cup action yesterday, Crofton/Garryduff missed their chance of going top of Division 1A when they were surprisingly defeated by Mallow 3-1 in Garryduff. Thomas Daly, Niall Bucke and Prince Amechi were on the mark for the north Cork side.
Ballincollig moved above Crofton/Garryduff on goal difference after a single Eoin Ross goal was enough to see off Fermoy, while strugglers Glasheen and Bandon played out a 1-1 draw. Ross Healy got Glasheen’s goal with Liam Sheehan replying for Bandon.
