Lizarazu bound for Marseille after Bayern exit

FRANCE left-back Bixente Lizarazu has left German side Bayern Munich and signed a two-year contract with Olympique Marseille.

“Lizarazu joined the team on Tuesday evening at their training camp of Port Crouesty after signing his two-year contract and attended their friendly against Stade Rennes,” the French Ligue 1 club said.

Bayern had said in April they expected the defender to leave the club after winning four German titles, three German Cups and the Champions League in 2001.

After starting his career at Girondins Bordeaux, the 34-year-old Lizarazu, who was born in the Basque area of France, moved to Spain to join Athletic Bilbao in 1996 before joining Bayern a year later.

A key player in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winning teams, Lizarazu has won 97 caps, the last one when France were defeated by Greece in the Euro 2004 quarter-finals.
