Beckham fit to face Chelsea

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Alex Ferguson yesterday confirmed that David Beckham would be fit to face Chelsea in tonight’s Worthington Cup.

It had been widely reported that the England midfielder had suffered a knee problem in the victory over West Ham at the weekend.

"No, he didn't," said Ferguson. "He was training this morning and there is no problem."

Beckham could be in the starting line-up after having to settle for a place on the bench in his first two matches after recovering from a broken rib. Such has been United's remarkable transformation in recent weeks, he has hardly been missed.

Striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also expected to play tonight after shrugging off a slight calf strain picked up on Saturday.

United go into the quarter-final tie on the back of seven straight wins and four clean sheets.

Ferguson insists he will field a strong squad for the cup game and states they are in it to win it. "There is no question that in the last few games the players have increased their performance level," he said.

"But the attitude has been good all along. That is the foundation of where we are at the moment. We are pleased.

"I don't know what side I am going to play tomorrow, I am mulling it over. But I know Chelsea are going to play their strongest side and I have to take recognition of that and make sure we have a side that can win.

"We want to give one or two players the experience but the main structure of the team will be the same as Saturday. A home draw in a quarter-final is always a great incentive. There is no question we want to win the cup.

"I have used the Worthington Cup in different ways over the years and young players have had great experience through it. We've been a bit unfortunate with away draws in the last few years Aston Villa, Sunderland, Tottenham, Arsenal. They were all difficult draws." The clubs are neck and neck in the title race with second-placed United one point ahead of their London rivals.

Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri wants to cement his transformation of Chelsea from also-rans to Premiership big guns by delivering Worthington Cup glory this season.

The Italian acknowledges the need to prove his side's development by stocking up the Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet.

He will field a full-strength side and warned he will not tolerate the sort of indiscipline which has robbed him of Celestine Babayaro for tonight's match. "I was very angry when Baba was sent off because I don't want my players to lose their heads. We must always play 11 against however many players."

Marcel Desailly is back in the squad to face United after missing the Boro game due to undisclosed personal reasons.
