ROY KEANE has claimed it would be a “cop-out” to label this season one of transition at Manchester United.

For the second time in three years, the Red Devils have finished outside the top two and will return for pre-season training in July knowing they must negotiate their way through the tricky final qualifying round before taking their place in the Champions League.

With only the consolation prize of the FA Cup still to play for, much of the blame is being levelled at the failure of Alex Ferguson's quintet of close-season arrivals to make their anticipated impact.
