NEWCASTLE’S hopes of bringing Sylvain Distin back to Tyneside were dealt a blow last night when Manchester City turned down a £5m bid.

City confirmed they had rejected the Magpies’ offer for the 27-year-old Frenchman as Graeme Souness stepped up his efforts to find a partner for £8m capture Jean-Alain Boumsong.

The news came after the Magpies officially unveiled Boumsong and fellow newcomer Celestine Babayaro.
