SCOTLAND manager Berti Vogts has issued a personal apology to the Tartan Army following the 4-0 thrashing by Wales.

Wednesday night’s drubbing at the Millennium Stadium meant the long-suffering fans had seen 10 goals fly into the net in just two games following the 6-0 defeat in Holland which ended their Euro 2004 dream in November.

The latest chapter in the Vogts disaster story has seen some fans and former internationals call for his resignation.

But while the German vowed to fight on he did at least say sorry via the Scottish FA’s official website, www.scottishfc.co.uk.

“First of all, I would like to apologise to the Tartan Army, who came to Cardiff in such numbers and created a superb atmosphere in the stadium,” he said.

“They deserve much better and the overall performance was not acceptable. My target is still qualification for the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and I am more determined than ever to take Scotland there. The Wales match was the first of six or seven friendlies before the World Cup qualifiers begin in September, and the team should be judged on its competitive record.

“Before our next match, against Romania in March, I will bring the players together for a short training camp, to continue their development.

“As I said earlier in the week, I have a contract until 2006, and although it will take some time for the young players to develop, I remain committed to the Scotland team and to World Cup qualification.”

SFA chief executive David Taylor, attempted to divert some of the flak away from the German. He said: “Obviously there will be criticism after defeats, but the personal lampooning of Berti in some sections is objectionable and will do nothing to help the team.”
