Birmingham still keen to sign Magpies’ Bowyer
Bowyer turned down the chance to join Blues because, according to club co-owner David Sullivan, he feared a backlash from the city’s Asian community. However, Bowyer later admitted he would prefer a move to either London - his former club Charlton are interested in acquiring his services - or France.
Bruce, however, still has hopes of bringing the one-time international to Birmingham and is keen to sign a midfielder of his pedigree.
He said: “I’d still like to try and do something. Lee is a player I admire. Whether he remains available or not, I’m not sure. It’s two or three weeks since we last had a conversation with Lee and we will have to wait and see what develops. Lee is a very good footballer,” he said.
A section of fans had protested about the possible signing of Bowyer via an internet petition and there has been some opposition to selling Darren Carter to West Brom.
But Bruce insisted: “People might think I am wrong, but that’s part and parcel of the job. It’s my job to make decisions on players and individuals.”
