Ferguson confident United don't need new stars to shine
While Kevin Keegan has been splashing the cash across the city and the likes of Birmingham and Middlesbrough have tried to take advantage of a deflated market by strengthening their squads, Old Trafford has remained quiet.
One move for Sunderland's speedy front-man David Bellion ended in acrimony and a couple of other inquiries came to nothing, leaving Ferguson to settle with his existing troops for the four-month run-in to glory on four fronts.
However, at least he knows all his domestic and European rivals are in the same position, justifying the existence of a transfer window which has been attacked from all quarters.
"We are in a different position to some of the other clubs," said Ferguson. "We have been looking for players who can play in Europe and that is not easy, bearing in mind how many teams are involved. We did have a look at one or two things but it never came to anything.
"However, it's right that we are all in the same situation. For quite a few years some countries have operated differently to others.
"If there is a regulation operating in Europe and only one or two countries use it, it is wrong. The rule should be in use everywhere, either we all do it or we don't do it at all."
With the exception of South African winger Quinton Fortune, who is due to return from his broken leg within a fortnight, Ferguson reports a clean bill of health for tomorrow's testing trip to Southampton.
Confidence in the Red Devils camp could hardly be higher, given the manner of their 6-0 FA Cup win over West Ham last Sunday.
Ferguson also had the added bonus of watching chief title rivals Arsenal drop a couple of points at Liverpool on Wednesday, although the United boss had left the ground before Emile Heskey grabbed the late leveller.
That result means United trail the Gunners by six points, although they do have a game in hand against Birmingham on Tuesday.
"If Liverpool had won it would have been better but we have to be satisfied that Arsenal dropped two points from a winning position," said Ferguson.
"That can only be good for us The key for us now is to drive on and make sure we don't make any mistakes."
Changes can be expected, despite the handsome nature of United's most recent win. Ferguson has never been scared to rotate his players in an effort to keep them fresh and England midfielder Nicky Butt could come back into contention for a starting berth after a couple of late substitute appearances.
After having their hunger and desire questioned before the start of the season, Ferguson's side look to have regained their familiar bond.
Every goal is greeted by an open display of jubilation throughout the side, which the Old Trafford chief hopes will give his team an extra edge on the run-in.
"There is a terrific team spirit, which you see when the side are celebrating their goals. There is a good unity."
"I am pleased with that unity because at this time of year, when the chips are down, you know you have a chance."
United are bidding to become only the second side to triumph at St Mary's Stadium this season, following Liverpool's unexpected victory there earlier in the month.
It took a late Diego Forlan strike to defeat the Saints at Old Trafford, since when Gordon Strachan's side have recovered to become the season's surprise packets.
Currently occupying a top six berth, the south coast outfit will fancy their chances of avenging that previous defeat against a United side whose away form needs to become more consistent.
"Southampton have done exceptionally well this season," said Ferguson.
"Moving to a new stadium has helped them and their form is there for everyone to see.
"We have missed chances away from home this season but we need a run of victories to get us into a really good position.
"Southampton will give us a real test but we don't expect any easy games on the run in."
