Megson not going to Sunderland, says West Brom chairman
The Baggies boss is one of several names linked with the Stadium of Light job following the sacking of Peter Reid last night.
George Graham, David O’Leary and Mick McCarthy were immediately linked with the job as chairman Bob Murray seeks to appoint a new manager before the Black Cats next match - at home to West Ham on October 19.
O’Leary is not in the running according to the Sunderland Echo, meaning the field including Megson has narrowed. But Albion chairman Peace insists his manager will not be lured north.
He said: ‘‘I know Gary is happy with what we have achieved at this club and he is excited about the future.
‘‘Gary is an exciting young manager and we are lucky to have him at West Brom,” he said.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could spend the rest of his career at Highbury, according to the club’s vice-chairman.
David Dein said yesterday that he hoped Wenger would take up a place on the board or a role as technical director after ending his managerial career. But Dein was quick to point out he had no plans to move the Frenchman upstairs in the near future.
“It’s fairly common knowledge that Arsene’s signed an extension to his current contract. I think the board will seriously consider, when he’s finally ready, inviting him on to the board or becoming technical director because he’s a very special guy. Let’s hope he’s got a lot more to do on the field first.
The Gunners are currently unbeaten in their last 30 Premiership matches and have been tipped for success in the league, FA Cup and the Champions League. And Dein believes it is all down to Wenger.
He explained: “He has transformed the club from start to finish: his training ground methods, his dietary controls and the way he’s extended players’ careers.
“He has made average players good, good players very good and has made very good players world-class. And his knowledge of players is exemplary.”
Wenger moved to Highbury in September 1996 and has already picked up two league and cup doubles for the team - in 1998 and last season. In December last year Wenger signed a new four-year contract at the club ending months of speculation he was on the verge of a move elsewhere.
Among the jobs he has been linked with are the position of French national coach or as Alex Ferguson’s successor at Manchester United.
