Penney lauds Munster's 'courageous' win in Perpignan

Munster coach Rob Penney has described his team's performance in the Heineken Cup yesterday as "average but courageous".

It was yet another European miracle that saw Munster snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in Perpignan.

JJ Hanrahan is the toast of the province as it was his brilliant late individual try that has kept the province in the competition.

Italian international Tommaso Benvenuti only a minute previous, scored what looked like the sinker, even though the final pass looked forward and the referee JP Doyle questioned it but did not refer to the TMO.

Aside from JJ's late try, not converted by Ian Keatley, it really came down to Perpignan's Tommy Allen missing the conversion from Benvenuti's try.

Rob Penney said: "They ripped us up down the outside, we made a couple of little defensive errors and there were a few forward passes that didn't get picked up on and that would have been a disappointing finish for us."

"It was a pretty average performance by us but courageous always courageous, I'm so proud of this young group to come away from a set piece where we got a poor launch from a few dropped balls."

"All of a sudden we got some structure back and it was beautiful to watch, its another layer of a special Munster moment which is just wonderful for this group."

With two games to go, Munster are out in front of pool 6 with games against Gloucester away and Edinburgh at home, Penney is happy with how his side have bounced back from the opening round loss in Murrayfield.

Penney said: "It's a great place to be, we were criticized after Edinburgh and the boys took a lashing but they have now bounced back with three credible wins and we still have so much left in the tank."
