White may coach Lions

World Cup-winning coach Jake White has admitted he could be tempted to coach the British and Irish Lions in next year’s tour of South Africa.

White led the Springboks to the Webb Ellis Trophy in the autumn but is currently unemployed after opting not to re-apply for his job when his deal expired after the tournament.

The South African could take his pick from some of the most highest-profile jobs in world rugby following his success with the Boks, but he admitted today that he would relish leading the Lions back to his homeland.

“I’d never say never. They haven’t asked me specifically but it’s something I would consider,” he said.

“I’d always consider it, it comes around once every four years and it’s a great honour to coach the Lions.

“The Lions is a massive thing. And let’s face it, the next tour is playing against the world champions.”
