Woodward cleared over Auckland comments

England boss Clive Woodward will not be disciplined following his comments during a post-match press conference in Auckland two months ago.

Woodward was furious after lock Simon Shaw received a red card from Welsh referee Nigel Williams – on the recommendation of Australian touch judge Stuart Dickinson – after just 11 minutes against New Zealand.

England, who were 6-0 up when Shaw was dismissed, went on to lose the second Test 36-12.

Woodward questioned the decision’s merits during his post-match press conference at Eden Park.

There was also a general feeling that Shaw had been harshly dealt with, and the Wasps forward was subsequently cleared of foul play when he appeared before a three-man disciplinary panel the following day.

The New Zealand Rugby Football Union supplied press conference footage to International Rugby Board chiefs, who then referred the matter to the Rugby Football Union.

“I have reviewed the evidence, courtesy of a DVD of the press conference,” said RFU disciplinary officer Jeff Blackett.

“I have decided that although Sir Clive Woodward made some comments, which questioned the merits of the decision to send off Simon Shaw, any criticism was very minor.

“These comments were not prejudicial to the interests of the game, nor did it bring the game into disrepute.

“In those circumstances, there is no case to answer and no further action is necessary,” added Blackett.

“I have, however, reminded the England management about the requirements of the code of conduct.”

England lost both Tests on tour against New Zealand, and were also thumped 51-15 by Australia in Brisbane before returning home.
