Rob Howley swept Wasps to Heineken Cup glory with the match-winning try at Twickenham yesterday and then asked boss Warren Gatland for a new contract.

The former Wales skipper’s three-year deal runs out at the end of next season but he wants a 12-month extension which will allow him to end his playing career at The Causeway Stadium.

“When I joined Wasps I never thought I would be playing at this level. In two years I have won the Zurich Premiership, Heineken Cup and Parker Pen Challenge Cup. Hopefully I will add to that list,” he said.

“I had retired from international rugby and if I had not done that then I would not be where I am today.

"Wasps wanted to recruit senior players who would be available during the World Cup.

“I have committed myself to the club, moved my family up to London and I have thoroughly enjoyed the last two years.

“I am going to be here next year and I will have to speak to Warren about a contract after that. I would like to carry on at Wasps.”
