The oldest club in Ireland, Dublin University have just cause to re-start the celebrations of their 150th year in rugby, after they relegated Sunday’s Well 34-3, and in doing so reached top spot in Division Two on the final afternoon of the season.
The win, the 11th of the Students’ campaign, sees them promoted to the top flight next season, and into a semi-final clash with Dublin rivals Old Belvedere in the coming weeks.
The other semi-final will see UL Bohemians line out against provincial rivals UCC – showing the strength of the university game across the country.
Having led 10-0 at the break, DU pushed on at College Park, led superbly well by out-half Keelan McGowan, with a Jono Lynch penalty the Cork side’s only reply.
UCC scored all their points in the first half, including two tries, in a 17-10 win at Old Crescent. Bective led by 17-10 at half time against Munsters, and kept that lead in a 24-17 win at Tom Clifford Park.
Elsewhere, Barnhall, DLSP and Midleton ended their campaigns in mid-table but finished off with home wins – 17-5 v Ballynahinch, 20-0 v Malone and 10-9 v Thomond respectively.
