Blues gain revenge over Glasgow
Cardiff Blues 29 Glasgow 19
Cardiff Blues bounced back from a dreadful first-half performance to claim a comfortable victory over the Celtic League’s bottom dogs.
A 15-minute blitz early in the second period guaranteed Cardiff another Scottish scalp to follow last weekend’s victory at Edinburgh.
Glasgow began with an enthusiasm which belied their lowly position, with former Scotland pair Glenn Metcalfe and Jon Petrie prominent and it was skipper Petrie who set up the first try.
The big number eight brushed past from tentative tackling and stormed away to put centre Alan Bulloch in for a score which fly-half Colin Gregor converted.
The Blues, slow to find their rhythm, began to settle and drew level with a fine try by young left wing Jonny Vaughton, who evaded three pairs of grasping hands to slide in at the flag.
Nicky Robinson converted superbly and then kicked a simple penalty but Glasgow were back in front by the break, despite losing lock Andy Hall to a harsh yellow card.
He had just returned when the visitors ran back a loose Cardiff kick and Bulloch was again there to round matters off. Gregor added the extra points.
With the words of coach Dai Young no doubt ringing in their ears, the Blues looked a different team in the second half, running in three tries in a quarter of an hour.
A Matt Allen break created a second for Vaughton before Nick Walne, on the opposite wing, capitalised on a massive overlap.
The outstanding Nicky Robinson then raced in from 40 yards, adding two touchline conversions to put the game out of Glasgow’s reach.
The Scots kept on trying, however, with replacement Joe Beardshaw forcing his way over for a consolation try.
