Harlequins hammer Galwegians on the road
Galwegians 12 Belfast Harlequins 47
Belfast Harlequins’ New Zealand born scrum-half Reece Spee scored four tries as bottom side Galwegians slumped to an embarrassing 47-12 defeat at Glenina.
Andre Bester’s side were in a mean mood from the off and their fourth win of the campaign was all but sealed by half-time.
A 26-0 lead was already loaded up by a hat-trick of efforts from Spee and a first of the season for centre Greg Greg Mitchell, with out-half Ajay Derwin converting Spee’s three efforts.
Galwegians, who have been reliant on out-half David Delaney for much of the campaign so far (61 points of a total of 91), hit back in the second half with tries for full back Ger Brady (47 mins) and centre Matt O’Mahony (69) with Delaney adding one conversion but it was still all Harlequins.
December’s winning of their second Ulster Senior League title in two years has clearly buoyed this Harlequins outfit.
Further tries from Spee and a double for captain Darren Barbour and penalty kicker Willem Slabbert saw Belfast near the half-century.
A 24-14 win for Galwegians in Belfast, with a brace from wing John Cleary, sent the Connacht side to the top of Division One last November albeit for a short time. Roll on thirteen months and they are the bottom side in the league, with just one win from eight attempts now and staring at the drop.
