Rugby fans warned of security delays

Rugby fans going to England’s match at Twickenham today may be searched as a security precaution.

Fans are being warned to arrive up to 45 minutes early in case a search on arrival at the stadium is necessary.

A capacity crowd of 73,500 will descend on the stadium in south-west London for England’s RBS 6 Nations opener against France.

The Rugby Football Union said the decision to warn fans they might be searched was prompted by the current climate of heightened security concerns and is a response to any threat they had received.

The measure – taken in conjunction with police – is part of a review of security procedures, the RFU added.

Stadium director Richard Knight said: “We believe that this is a sensible precaution.

“Our security on a match day is very thorough, but we have decided to increase the number of personal searches to help reassure visitors to the ground on the day.

“To assist us with this process we would like to encourage spectators to arrive at the ground at least 45 minutes before kick-off.”

The international kicks off at 4pm.
