Six Nations: Wales look for first home win since '83

Wales ran out at the Millennium Stadium this afternoon looking to clinch second place in the disjointed 2001 Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championship.

But they face an Ireland side who have much to prove following their shock 32-10 defeat by Scotland at Murrayfield last month.

Coach Warren Gatland, whose contract is up for renewal in November, rang the changes since the mauling in Edinburgh, drafting in six players for a game his team must win if he is to retain the confidence of his employers.

History is certainly on Ireland's’ side for a match that was rearranged because of the foot-and-mouth epidemic - Wales have not beaten Ireland at home since 1983.

But a home win would be a fitting way for skipper David Young to celebrate his 50th cap - only 10 Welshmen have reached that mark before.
