Scotland captain Andy Nicol admits that he is facing a race against time to be fit for the Six Nations clash with Italy on March 17.

Scotland captain Andy Nicol admits that he is facing a race against time to be fit for the Six Nations clash with Italy on March 17.

The Glasgow Caledonians scrum-half suffered a dead leg in the Calcutta Cup defeat at Twickenham on Saturday.

He has already ruled himself out of the Welsh/Scottish League game against Cardiff at the weekend.

"It is not a case of me missing the trip to Wales in order to save myself for the international," said Nicol.

"I am simply not fit for what will be an extremely important match for the Reds.

"My Scotland involvement had nothing to do with my unavailability this weekend."
