Castletroy look to pack to shake off Crescent in derby clash

Castletroy coach Richie Feeney acknowledged his side’s strengths are in a big pack but still expects a difficult afternoon against a slick Crescent outfit.

Castletroy beat Crescent in Munster Schools Junior Cup and Bowen Shield competitions over the past three years but Feeney insisted they were hard earned victories. “There was just the bounce of a ball between us, they were both one score games so we wouldn’t read much into that.

“I suppose our big strength would be in the pack but they have some great broken field runners and we won’t take anything for granted. They were beaten but put it up to CBC in the first round and they coped very well with a very strong Rockwell pack in the quarter final, they were very impressive that day.”

Crescent lost that opening round 17-5 to Christians but bounced back strongly in the next couple of matches. They beat Glenstal 39-17 and then ousted holders Rockwell 17-5 last time out.

Castletroy sneaked past Glenstal Abbey in the first round 18-16 and accounted for St Clement’s 15-0 in the quarter final. Crescent coach Eugene McGovern is hoping his side can continue their good form of the last couple of rounds but knows they will have to be at their best to earn a place in the final.

“We’ve had three games, it was a hard shift but it was good to get through it and, hopefully, we will benefit from having played in very competitive games, particularly in the last two,” said McGovern.

“Castletroy pose a different type of threat and I think they might have even gone into the competition as favourites, there’s a very good pedigree in their team.”

However, he is looking to secure a place in the final. “There’s strength across the team but our backs are the strongest section and I suppose that would be evident from the way we play. Castletroy are very strong up front and we’ll have a challenge there, we’re very competitive in the pack but wouldn’t have a massive side by any means, it’s going to be a case of trying to match them.”
