Delon Armitage forced to wait for result of ban appeal

Toulon full-back Delon Armitage must wait until today to find out the outcome of his appeal against the 12-week ban issued for using abusive language after his hearing was adjourned.

Armitage was found to have directed a foul-mouthed tirade at Leicester supporters in the aftermath of Toulon’s 25-21 Champions Cup defeat at Welford Road on December 7.

The three-man appeal panel met in London last night and chose to delay their verdict overnight.

“The hearing convened to consider the appeal by Delon Armitage has adjourned for the evening,” read a statement released by European Club Rugby.

“The appeal committee heard submissions on behalf of Armitage and on behalf of the EPCR disciplinary officer. They will reconvene on Friday to determine their decision.”

After the European champions lost to Leicester, Armitage made a number of comments within earshot of spectators – including children – using foul and abusive language.In a damning verdict released by the hearing that imposed the 12-week suspension, Armitage was found to be “an habitual offender” with “an appalling record”.

Armitage was banned for eight weeks in 2011 after a misconduct complaint for using threatening and/or abusive language towards an anti-doping official was upheld and he has also been suspended on three separate occasions for incidents of foul play on the pitch.
