Rosser has sights set on big finish
A 40-7 defeat to England at Stade Jean-Bouin left the Irish girls shell-shocked but there is still plenty to play for against the tournament hosts in Paris.
“We have to stay positive. It hurts at the moment but when we wake up we have to go again and focus on Sunday,” urged the 36-year-old, who came out of retirement for the tournament. “We need to park this game and move on because we can still finish third which would be a huge achievement.
“We set out to make the last-four but we really thought we could get to the final and give ourselves a shot at winning it.”
The Irish camp will face the host nation France (live on TG4) prior to the World Cup final between England and Canada (6pm) in the sold-out Paris stadium. “We can’t let ourselves or our supporters stay down about this,” said Rosser.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who travelled and we know how well we’ve been supported back home.
“It’s important that we get that third-place finish. Irish women’s rugby has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and it would be great to keep that going.”
In the closing stages of the England game, Ireland’s most-capped player, Lynne Cantwell (87 caps) — who is playing in her fourth World Cup — suffered a bad knock, and unfortunately for the Richmond RFC player she has been ruled out with concussion.
Opponents France suffered a two-point defeat to Canada in their semi-final — which was officiated by Dublin referee Helen O’Reilly — and, having only conceded two tries so far, the Irish will need all their attacking skills to break them down.
