Junior Rugby Focus: Kanturk move to second spot

Kanturk won the big game in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League to move into second place, two points behind leaders St. Mary’s, after their 34-15 away win over Clonmel.

Clonmel led 15-8 at half time with tries from Neville Melbourne and Ronan Cross with Brian Lonergan kicking a conversion and a penalty. Kealon Buckley replied with a try for Kanturk and Stephen McAuliffe kicked a penalty.

It was all Kanturk in the second-half with Buckley, Dan McCabe, Luke McCabe and John Duggan all scoring tries and McAuliffe converted three of them.

St. Mary’s remain in top spot after their 34-15 home win over Muskerry.

A try from Lorcan Collins and a conversion and a penalty by Darragh Masterson gave Muskerry an early 10-0 lead. Mary’s hit back to lead 14-10 at half time with tries from Ben Sargent and Matthew Ryan, both converted by Sargent.

Two tries by Brian Purcell and one by Ross Kelly and a conversion and penalty by Sargent extended the home side’s advantage. Ian O’Sullivan scored a late try for the visitors.

Cobh Pirates extended their unbeaten run with a 13-11 home win over Kilfeacle. Kevin Allen scored a try for the Pirates and Eoin Geary converted and Greg Higgins kicked two penalties. Tom Doyle replied with a try for the Tipperary side and Gavin Heuston kicked two penalties.

Tralee continued their challenge with a 23-8 home win over Clonakilty. Dan O’Connor, Eoin O’Carroll and Liam Quaid scored tries for the winners and Garreth Walsh added two penalties and a conversion.

Batt Duggan replied with a try for Clonakilty and Ciarán Calnan kicked a penalty.

Newcastle West defeated Skibbereen 16-10. Two penalties from Sean Herlihy gave Newcastle West a 6-0 interval lead.

A try from James Kelly and a conversion and penalty by Herlihy extended the home side’s advantage. Skibbereen rallied to secure a losing bonus point with a try from David Shannon and a conversion and a penalty by Ger Hurley.

Old Christians defeated Waterpark 29-24. Shane Barry, Dave O’Driscoll, Peter Twohig, Eddie O’Connell and John O’Donoghue scored tries for the Rathcooney side and Stuart Lee added two conversions. Paddy Kiersey, Eoin O’Connor, Scott Hornibrook and Gareth Molloy replied with tries for Waterpark and Colin O’Shea kicked two conversions.

Mallow defeated Galbally 8-5 with a try from Dave Walsh and a penalty by Andrew Cashman.

Kinsale lost their unbeaten record in Division Two when Bandon defeated them 6-3. Richard Walsh kicked two penalties for the winners and Peter Murphy replied for Kinsale.

St. Senan’s have moved top after their 30-5 away win over Presentation. Brian Collins scored three tries for the winners and Neil McDonogh got one and Brian Rowe converted all four and added two penalties.

Killarney edged out Killorglin 19-14 in their derby game.

Ger Moynihan scored a try for the winners and Paudie Sheahan kicked a conversion and four penalties.

Noel O’Reilly and Brian Hayes replied with tries for Killorglin. Trevor West kicked a conversion and Dave Coffey two penalties.
